Casual Towny is a server targeted at players with the passion for building and roleplaying. In this 1:500 scaled Earth map, you can either join an existing town or start your own and become a mayor. A mayor can claim and manage lands, recruit residents and assign town rules, roles and perms. Nations are made up of towns and can ally with one another. Players can also progress individually through different jobs and quests as well as owning plots of land. There are also economy features such as town/nation banks, plot purchase, taxes and daily upkeep collection.

What is Towny?Towny is a plugin that lets players create a community of their own in forms of towns and nations.
- A town consists of one or more players which allows them to claim land, establish a settlement and participate in intra-server trade
- A nation is made up of one or more towns affiliated together and can either ally with another nation or declare them as their adversaries.
On top of all that, there is a server economy in which everything from making a town/nation to claiming land is relied on.
SMPEarth has two (2) variants of Towny servers:
Casual and
Siege.
- Casual Towny offers a more laid-back experience, allowing builders and roleplayers to foster on the custom 1:300 Earth map. Wilderness PVP is absent here and war is only initiated when nations declare each other as enemies.
- Meanwhile, players would need to keep their heads up in Siege Towny as PVP is enabled in wilderness and a nation can declare a siege on a town if there’s a need for it, which means alliances will come in handy here. One can live out their dreams either as a benevolent ruler or an ambitious conqueror.
I’m new here/this is my first time playing Towny, what do I do?As a new player, you’re regarded as an Outsider, townless and landless.
- Once you join the server by connecting to the server IP address play.smpearth.com, you’ll find yourself at the server hub. Simply walk forward to get to the Casual Towny server.
- You will be transported to the server spawn island, separate from the Earth map itself.
- Continent warp portals: walk right from spawn, and you’ll see many custom portals leading to different continents of the world (Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America). Alternatively, do /warp [continent_name] for fast travel.
- Crucible: a unique volcanic warp leading to an island called Crucible, essentially the place where you can kill as many nether mobs (ghasts, zombified piglins, blazes, magma cubes and wither skeletons) as you can.
- There are also rows of shops with NPCs - this is the marketplace accessible via /warp shops where you can purchase almost anything.
To get to the Earth map, simply enter any of the portals in spawn island or do /warp [continent]. If you need to go back to spawn island, do /spawn.
In order to claim lands, you need to become a Resident. At this point, you have two (2) options: join an existing town, or make your own town.
- Join a town
- Get invited by a Mayor or Town Assistant (check /t [town_name]).
- Mayor will send invite which will appear in chat.
- Player will see invite in chat and see the options to respond (either type /accept [town_name] or /deny [town_name], or click either in chat).
- Join an open town
- Check /t list and see any towns that says [Open] next to it
- Do /t join [town_name] without invite
- Start a Town
- Do /t new [town_name]. Use underscores (_) instead of spaces.
- The current townblock/chunk they are standing in will be the town’s homeblock, the exact spot/position will be the town’s spawnpoint (can be change via /t set homeblock and /t set spawn)
- More townblocks can be claimed using /t claim (must be directly adjacent to town spawn)
What are townblocks?Townblocks = plots = Minecraft chunks (16x16x128 - full height of the world)
How do I see townblocks?Toggle using F3+G keys or type the command /res toggle plotborder which shows smokey border as you walk across chunks (alternatively, res toggle constantplotborder will constantly show smokey border, and /res toggle clear to remove it)
How many townblocks do I get/can I claim?By default, when a player starts a new town, they will have 8 townblocks in total to claim
To get more, either:
- invite more players to join the town (via /t add/invite [player]),
- join a large nation with more than 80+ players (check /n list) that will offer up to 140 max nation bonus
- purchase up to 10 townblocks from the server (via /t buy)
I’m in a town, why can’t I claim townblocks?- Townblocks can only be claimed by the Town Mayor or Assistant.
- Normal residents can still claim and own land if the Mayor puts up a plot for sale
- Mayors can do so via /plot fs [$] (amount can be zero) and residents can claim it via /plot claim
- Residents can toggle their plot perms as follows:
- /plot toggle [pvp/fire/mobs/explosion]
- /plot set perm [friend/nation/ally/outsider] [on/off] - general perms
- /plot set perm [friend/nation/ally/outsider] [build/destroy/itemuse/switch] [on/off] - specific/customized perms
- Switch perm covers the use of blocks which are clicked on such as chest, trapped chest, shulker box, furnace, blast furnace, dispenser, dropper, hopper, jukebox, stonecutter, smithing table, fletching table, smoker, loom, grindstone, composter, cartography table, bell, barrel, brewing stand, lever, pressure plates, wooden doors, fence gates, trapdoors etc.
- Itemuse perm covers the use of items such as minecarts, boats, ender pearl, fireball, chorus fruit, lead, etc.
- Do /res friend [add/remove] [player] to grant them friend perms in your own plots
- Do /plot perm or /plot perm hud to see the perms set up in any plots (fnao is the shortform for friend/nation/ally/outsider, e.g. f--- only friends are allowed perms in it etc.)
- Mayors won’t be able to bypass the plot perms, but have the right to tax them per plot (/t set plottax [$]) or evict the resident off the plots they own (/plot evict)
I’m a mayor/I now own plots, can I customize my townblocks/plots?- Yes, you can sell the townblocks and claim it yourself, turning them into plots
- The difference between the two is that townblocks are chunks claimed by lands, and plots are townblocks sold by the Town Mayor and personally owned by Residents.
- Setting up plot permissions:
- For townblocks:
- There are 4 groups: Resident, Nation (anyone from any town in the same nation as you), Ally (anyone from any town in a nation allied with yours) and Outsider
- To toggle general perms, do /t set perm [resident/nation/ally/outsider] [on/off]
- To toggle specific perms do /t set perm [resident/nation/ally/outsider] [build/destroy/itemuse/switch] [on/off]
- Switch perm covers the use of blocks which are clicked on such as chest, trapped chest, shulker box, furnace, blast furnace, dispenser, dropper, hopper, jukebox, stonecutter, smithing table, fletching table, smoker, loom, grindstone, composter, cartography table, bell, barrel, brewing stand, lever, pressure plates, wooden doors, fence gates, trapdoors etc.
- Itemuse perm covers the use of items such as minecarts, boats, ender pearl, fireball, chorus fruit, lead, etc.
- Check /t to ensure the perms are in correct order
- For plots:
- There are 4 groups: Friend, Nation, Ally, Outsider
- To toggle general perms, do /plot set perm [friend/nation/ally/outsider] [on/off]
- To toggle specific perms, do /plot set perm [friend/nation/ally/outsider] [build/destroy/itemuse/switch] [on/off]
- Check /plot perm to ensure the perms are in correct order
- You can also customize them via /plot set [arena/embassy/farm/inn/jail/shop/wilds] or to undo, do /plot set reset. To add customized names, do /plot set name [name].
- /plot set arena
- PVP and friendly-fire damage are enabled
- Keep-inventory is also enabled
- /plot set embassy
- Set up prices: /t set embassyprice [$] (default price for all embassy plots) or /plot fs [$]
- Set up taxes: /t set embassytax [$] (collected with plot tax, /t set plottax [$])
- Can be bought by any player, regardless if in a town or not. Players do not lose the embassy plot ownership if they leave a town.
- /plot set farm
- Players can only build/destroy blocks listed in /towny farmblocks here:
- Bamboo & bamboo saplings
- All variants of logs, saplings and leaves (oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak)
- All types of crops, plants and flowers (beetroots, cocoa beans, chorus plant, chorus flower, sweet berry bush, kelp, seagrass, tall seagrass, grass, tall grass, fern, large fern, carrots, wheat, potatoes, pumpkin, vine, melon, sugar cane, cactus, allium, azure bluet, blue orchid, cornflower, dandelion, lilac, lily of the valley, orange tulip, oxeye daisy, peony, pink tulip, poppy, red tulip, rose bush, sunflower, white tulip, wither rose)
- Nether warts, as well as crimson and warped variants of fungus, stem, hyphae, roots, wart block, sprouts, weeping/twisting vines and shroomlight
- Red and brown variants of mushroom and mushroom blocks
- Animals can also be killed in farm plots: pig, cow, chicken, sheep, mooshroom
- /plot set inn
- Allows anyone except nation enemies to use a bed to set their /res spawn
- /plot set jail
- Residents can be jailed if:
- The Mayor/Sheriff send them to jail via /t toggle jail [#] [player]
- They’re nation enemies/town outlaws and died int the town
- Residents can be unjailed if:
- They leave their town
- The Mayor/Sheriff releases them
- They pay a bail amount (/res jail paybail)
- They manage to escape the jail plot and town into the wilderness
- In jail, residents can’t teleport or use ender pearl and respawn there if died
- /plot set shop
- Set up prices: /t set shopprice [$] (default price for all shop plots) or /plot fs [$]
- Set up taxes: /t set shoptax [$] (collected with plot tax, /t set plottax [$])
- /plot set wilds
- Allows residents to destroy blocks listed in /towny wildsblocks such as ores, trees, flowers, mushrooms and other harvestable blocks, except stone, dirt, grass, and other terrain blocks.
- Useful for creating tree farms, and protecting the terrain around a town while still allowing residents to cut trees and explore caves.
What is upkeep?- Upkeep is an amount of money taken from town banks and nation banks automatically by the server every day (check /towny time for countdown till next day)
- Town Mayors and Nation Leaders are expected to have sufficient money in their respective banks to afford the daily upkeep collection and ensure the survival of their town and nation.
- Residents can deposit money into town bank via /t deposit [$] and into nation bank via /n deposit [$]
- Town upkeep depends on the number of residents, while nation upkeep is consistent regardless of the number of towns in it
- To check town and nation bank, do /t and /n respectively
- Towns with negative balances in their banks will be declared bankrupt and lose the rights to invite members, set open status, claim more land and build anything on it unless the Mayor deposits money to remove the bankrupt status.
- If the Mayor keeps the balance positive in a given time, the town will fall into Ruined state, which means it can’t be claimed by another town yet can be griefed.
- The Mayor will need to reclaim the town via /t reclaim (paying a certain price, check /towny prices) to avoid it being deleted forever.
- If a resident reclaims a ruined town in time before the Mayor, then they will become the new Mayor.
- If a ruined town isn’t reclaimed by any of its residents in a given time, the town will be deleted for good.
What is an outpost? While townblocks are required to be adjacent with town spawn and one another, Mayor can set up an outpost, essentially an external claim which can be blocks away from /t spawn.
- An outpost currently costs [$$$] to claim. Check /t to see town bank balance is sufficient, and do /t claim outpost.
- To teleport to an outpost, do /t outpost. If a town has many outposts, do /t outpost [#]. It is advised that the Mayor makes a list of all the outposts as reference beforehand.
- A Mayor can then claim more townblocks if desired extending from the outpost.
How do I get money?Money is not only essential but critical on the server.
- Go to /warp shops and explore the 12 NPC shops there. (prices may subject to change)
- Some blocks can be sold directly to the server via /sell hand. Do /worth to check their prices first.
